Nutrition Certification and Licensing
Licensing
Obtaining a license to practice nutrition is governed on a state-by-state level. Students and prospective students who do not plan to practice in Connecticut should check with the appropriate licensing entity in the state they plan to practice to determine what is needed for legal practice of nutrition counseling. (ANA) provides information on this for all states. As requirements can change, check with your state’s licensing entity to confirm the current laws and regulations for the state where you plan to practice.
Certification
Our program is designed to meet the educational requirements for several nutrition certifications.
- (CNS) - Students in UB’s MS in Nutrition program are eligible to earn 200‑255 hours of supervised practical experience in the Virtual Clinic (NUTR 560K). Final determination of eligibility for the CNS credential is made solely by the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists (BCNS).
- (CCN)
- - Offers advanced standing towards diplomate programs (DACBN) for those with professional doctoral degrees who have completed UB’s MS in Nutrition degree. No additional hours of training are required, as UB’s MS program exceeds the ACBN’S course hour requirements. For doctorate level degrees only.
